Former Stryama airfield near Banya

Overview

The former Stryama airfield is located by the town of Banya in Karlovo Municipality, Plovdiv Province. Its position close to the town made it unusual for a small airfield: visitors could reach Banya without a long transfer after landing.

Older source information places it around 9 km from Karlovo and 40 km from Plovdiv, at an altitude of 279 m above sea level. Because the airport is closed, please treat all operational aviation details on this page as historical notes rather than current travel guidance.

Local aviation history

The airfield was associated with the Staroplaninski Orli Aero Club, which brought together amateur pilots of light and ultralight aircraft. The older source text notes that the Stryama runway was inaugurated in August 2009.

The site was described as a place for recreational flying, training and motivational flights, parachute jumps, microlights and paramotors. During hang-gliding and paragliding events in the Sopot area, participants could finish near the airfield.
